As revealed in DC vs. Vampires #8, one tragic loss is all that separates Jayna of the Wonder Twins from being one of DC's most powerful heroes.

Of all DC's superhero teams, the Wonder Twins are generally the least likely to be taken seriously. The often goofy duo of Jayna and Zan, however, actually harbor one dark secret. As revealed in the latest issue of the DC vs. Vampires event, one family tragedy is all that is keeping Jayna from becoming an effective member of the superhero community.

Together, Jayna and Zan form the Wonder Twins; extraterrestrial siblings dedicated to fighting crime alongside their pet monkey, Gleek. Upon bumping fists and declaring "Wonder Twin powers, activate!" the duo are able to alter form, with Jayna choosing a type of animal to become as Zan transforms into water. In the universe of DC vs. Vampires, Zan tragically died in the early days of the undead uprising, shredded to death in a blender construct from a vampiric Green Lantern. With Zan out of the picture, Jayna becomes an integral resistance member, killing Vampire Firestorm and delivering Supergirl into the hands of other rebellion leaders. On her own in the vampire apocalypse, Jayna quickly discovers that her brother's death actually proved extremely beneficial, at least where her powers - and thus her ability to survive the end of the world - are concerned.

DC vs. Vampires #8 comes from the writing duo of James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg, with art by Otto Schmidt and Daniele Di Nicuolo. Near the issue's end, Jayna bursts from the chest of an evil Atlantean in the form of a water tiger, saving Supergirl, Steel and Black Manta on their voyage to Australia. Here, Jayna announces an important discovery following her brother's demise: she has gained access to both of their powers simultaneously.

This new ability marks a major increase in Jayna's power. With her fellow Wonder Twin out of the picture, she now has full control over her own transformations: thus, she now holds the ability to activate the Wonder Twin powers at her own volition while also increasing her potential choices of transformation. This has already proven extremely beneficial to the resistance, as Jayna destroyed an Atlantean attacker in a way never before possible for her. While following Supergirl's boat in the water, Jayna allowed the Atlantean to breathe in her aquatic form, giving her the opportunity to destroy the assailant from the inside out. This marks a stark increase in Jayna's power, opening the door to potential abilities that will likely help her through this vampiric onslaught in a way she simply couldn't with her brother around.

Despite their relative lack of might, the Wonder Twins are deeply trusted by the Justice League, and are often treated as junior members. With Jayna's power increase, it makes sense that she'd move up to the big leagues, end of the world or not. It is however tragic that such an optimistic and idealistic hero has been turned into a killer by the vampire outbreak.

Zan often becomes the butt of the joke when it comes to the Wonder Twins, with his water powers seemingly rather useless in comparison to Jayna's animal transformations. As DC vs. Vampires #8 shows, a whole new world of powers lies in wait for the Wonder Twins, with one death in the family being all that separates one of DC's goofiest teams from creating one of its most powerful individuals.
