Artist Jeremy Simser has shared a storyboard from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that depicts Karl Mordo's cut gruesome fate. Chiwetel Ejiofor portrayed an alternate universe version of the sorcerer on Earth-838 in Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange 2. Karl Mordo previously made his debut in 2016's Doctor Strange as a mentor-turned-enemy of the titular hero, and the Multiverse of Madness saw the two face off again.

A devout follower of Tilda Swinton's Ancient One, Karl Mordo is one of the then-Sorceror Supreme's finest students, whose study of magic helped him overcome his demons and desire for vengeance. Mordo saved a broken Stephen (Benedict Cumberbatch) to Kamar-Taj, becoming an ally in the fight against Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen). But when the Ancient One's own use of forbidden magic is revealed, Mordo's faith is shattered. While the sequel introduced Earth-838's Mordo and the Illuminati, the whereabouts of the main MCU's Mordo was only hinted at by Stephen. In the Multiverse of Madness' audio commentary, Raimi and writer Michael Waldron revealed that Scarlet Witch initially decapitated Earth-616's Mordo in a bloody death scene, but the sequence was ultimately cut.

Marvel Studios artist Simser recently shared a storyboard on Instagram showing what would have happened to the original Mordo in Doctor Strange 2. In the storyboard, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) hovers above Kamar-Taj before her assault on the magical compound, where she summons the head of Mordo to her side, revealing he had attempted to kill her. Simser confirmed in his post that the sequence was later cut, before hinting that Earth-616's Mordo may still be alive. Check out Simser's artwork below.

While only an illustration, this concept art clearly shows the gory nature of Raimi's original plan for Mordo's death. A decapitated head would certainly have been keeping with the director's penchant for blood and violence, such as in his iconic Evil Dead franchise. Raimi elaborated on the context for this version of Mordo's fate in the Multiverse of Madness audio commentary, revealing that the alternative Doctor Strange 2 opening scene would have seen an aged, battle-weary Mordo target Wanda for her usage and corruption by the Darkhold, but ultimately fall to Scarlet Witch. Waldron explained that while he and Raimi were pleased with how the sequence was written, they ultimately felt that it  would slow down the pacing of the opening scene.

While Earth-616's Mordo inclusion was ultimately scrapped from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Simser's artwork provides a glimpse at what could have been. This scrapped Wanda/Scarlet Witch scene not only would have shown Mordo's fate, but also immediately established her as a major threat to Kamar-Taj by showing her brutal defeat of one of their former brightest sorcerers. Without this death scene, and with Mordo's fate beyond the Blip currently unknown, it is possible that the Earth-616 version or Ejiofor's vengeful sorcerer may yet return to cause further trouble for Doctor Strange.
