In a recent interview, House of the Dragon star, Matt Smith, questioned his character, Prince Daemon Targaryen's many sex scenes on the show.

Actor Matt Smith has questioned his many sex scenes in the Game of Thrones spinoff television series, House of the Dragon. The highly anticipated fantasy-drama show is based upon author George R.R. Martin's fantasy novel, Fire & Blood, which recounts the history of House Targaryen. Set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will center on the silver-haired dragon-riding Targaryen family and will chronicle the events leading up to the familial civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, a conflict that served as the beginning of the end of their reign.

Along with a high level of graphic violence, Game of Thrones was known for its fair share of nudity and gratuitous sex scenes. Emilia Clarke, who played Queen Daenerys Targaryen on the former show, has said that she found her nude scenes uncomfortable but also defended their use within the context of Game of Thrones' narrative. Although the amount of sex scenes were reduced as the series went on and found its audiences, the show still maintained a higher than average level of nudity. Now, House of the Dragon appears to following Game of Thrones' mold in regard with its use of sex.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Smith questioned his many sex scenes in House of the Dragon. Starring as Prince Daemon Targaryen, the actor found himself the subject of many sexual encounters. Smith admitted that he wondered whether or not the filmmakers were representing the books as written by Martin or injecting modern expectations of sex into the show. When asked if Daemon has too many sex scenes, the actor responded, "Yeah — slightly too much, if you ask me." Read more of what Smith said below.

“You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?’. And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.’ I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’ And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.”

Smith clearly found himself uncomfortable with the frequency of presumptive king, Prince Daemon Targaryen's, sexual encounters throughout the first season of the show. So much so that he has questioned whether what has been shot is faithful to the original source material or simply gratuitous. There is no doubt that sex has and will continue to sell on television but perhaps Smith wonders the cost to the narrative.

At a certain point, sex scenes can begin to feel forced and unnecessary if their inclusion in the story does not further the narrative or expand on any of the character's in a meaningful way. Complaints of a similar nature were lobbed at Game of Thrones' early seasons before the series picked up momentum and gained viewership. How House of the Dragon handles sex remains to be seen, but audiences can judge for themselves when the series premieres on HBO August 21.
