Exclusive: Bruce Campbell discusses his relationship with Sam Raimi and how their trash-talking on Doctor Strange 2 surprised the crew.

Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi’s trash-talking surprised the crew during the filming of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Campbell and Raimi’s work relationship stretches back to the first three Evil Dead films. After making a name for himself in the horror genre, Raimi famously directed Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire beginning in 2002. Campbell had iconic cameos in all three of those films, playing the Ring Announcer in Spider-Man, the "Snooty Usher" in Spider-Man 2, and a Maître d' in Spider-Man 3. He even would've had a cameo in Spider-Man 4 had it moved forward.

Earlier this year, Raimi made his long-awaited return to the comic book genre courtesy of Multiverse of Madness, which utilized his horror talents. The film follows Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he attempts to protect the universe-jumping America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who aims to steal her powers so that she can have a not-so-wholesome reunion with her children. Before Multiverse of Madness was released in theaters, longtime fans held out hope that Raimi would use the film as a vehicle to reunite with Campbell and continue their cameo tradition.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant at San Diego Comic-Con, Campbell discusses reuniting with Raimi on Doctor Strange 2. When asked how their partnership has evolved, Campbell reveals it now involves a lot of trash talk—which tends to surprise those around them. Read the full quote below:

“He's become, in the last 20 years, a big Hollywood director since he did the first Spidey. And the crews are usually very surprised at how we trash talk each other. Like constantly.

“They get weirded out when I trash talk him, because they're like, ‘Did he just say that to Sam Raimi?’ They don't really know our relationship. So, it's been very entertaining to stun the crew. And they also wonder why he's being so mean, all of a sudden.”

Campbell and Raimi first worked together on 1981’s The Evil Dead. The pair were in their early twenties and neither as well-known as they are today. After being friends with someone for that long, pleasantries tend to fall to the wayside. One might even say the comedic aspect of the relationship (as well as their history together) translates on-screen. Partway through Multiverse of Madness, Strange and America Chavez land in Earth-838. There, Campbell shows up as a vendor for a food stall, "Pizza Poppa," who is enchanted by Strange to beat himself up over a misunderstanding, which is a nod to Campbell’s role as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead films. In Multiverse of Madness' post-credits scene, Campbell's Pizza Poppa finally stops hitting himself before looking into the camera and exclaiming, “It’s over!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might not be the last time audiences see Campbell in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While there haven’t been any announcements for a Doctor Strange 3, nor has Raimi been confirmed to return for future films, Campbell previously teased deeper importance to his Doctor Strange 2 cameo. Depending upon his contract, Campbell could appear as food stall doppelgangers throughout the MCU’s multiverse in Phases 4-6. However, it seems likely Campbell would rather continue his cameo and trash-talking tradition alongside Raimi.
