The upcoming Agatha Harkness solo project could introduce ties to the Fantastic Four or even Mephisto while also exploring more of her backstory.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos, formerly known as Agatha: House of Harkness, could be one of the most important shows in the MCU’s Phase 5 and could be very pivotal to the future of the MCU's Multiverse Saga. Originally announced last November as part of Disney+ Day, the WandaVision spinoff came as a surprise because it wasn’t known when or if Agatha Harkness would be seen again any time soon. The upcoming series is a first for Marvel, as Agatha has never received a solo project in the comics, and this will be the character’s first opportunity to headline her own series, something that the upcoming Echo series will also have in common.

As production on the show is expected to begin early next year, little information about the plot is known to the public. It has a tentative release window for MCU Phase 5 in winter 2023/2024 and will be the final Marvel series to air in 2023. When audiences last saw Harkness in WandaVision, the character was put under the Scarlet Witch’s spell and now goes by the name Agnes, the “nosy neighbor” persona that Agatha took on when she infiltrated Westview and tried to absorb Wanda Maximoff’s powers for herself. One question about the plot that could be taken into consideration is when it takes place. If it takes place after WandaVision, then it’s expected that Agatha will find a way to break free from Wanda’s spell. But if it’s a prequel, there is a good chance the series will explore more of her time as a witch during the Salem Witch trials and perhaps put more of a focus on other witches as well. But this could be the perfect opportunity to introduce some major Marvel characters that haven’t appeared onscreen yet or bring back other characters that have already been established.

When Agatha Harkness was first introduced by Marvel Comics in the 1970s, the character had a strong connection with Franklin Richards, the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four. As his nanny, she had a very protective nature of the young boy, and this could be a fascinating way to introduce the character should Marvel Studios choose to adapt this storyline. Harkness also went on to mentor Wanda Maximoff in the comics as she attempted to show her how to use real magic, so this could set up the Scarlet Witch’s return and her rumored solo film. The long-awaited introduction of Mephisto could also finally come to fruition, a character that has been set up to appear throughout MCU Phase 4 but has yet to be introduced.

Coven of Chaos Seems Unnecessary, But Could Be Great

It's rare for Marvel to give an established antagonist their own solo project, but Loki showed how well it could work for a character that was fleshed out enough. Marvel could take a similar approach with Agatha: Coven of Chaos and depict Agatha Harkness as a witch who is sometimes evil and sometimes heroic. If Mephisto and the Scarlet Witch do end up making an appearance, another interesting storyline Marvel could adapt is making Wanda's children Billy and Tommy real and not part of Wanda's Chaos Magic. Because it was revealed so late into WandaVision's plot who and what Agatha's true nature was, her powers weren't displayed to the best of their abilities, as Wanda was able to outsmart her. More use of her magic could be shown that could make her more of a threat or even an ally.

Because the MCU's Phase 4 has adapted many comic book storylines such as the ones seen in Hawkeye and Moon Knight, it can be expected that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will do the same and introduce more of a supernatural side to the MCU, potentially even become a lead-in to the MCU's Midnight Sons team. The upcoming D23 event in September could give more insight as to what audiences can expect from this series. While the show may seem unnecessary due to focusing on a recently introduced antagonist, it could end up being a welcome surprise that is a worthy addition to Marvel's Phase 5.
